What is skin tonic?

skin tonic - toner - facial mist - balances pH - cream, mist, cotton pad, flower

Skin toner, toner, mist, tonic, facial toner, cleanser, facial mist, hydrosol, hydrolat, floral water, facial mist, flower water and skin tonic

These are just the words we could come up with for basically one and the same product - Skintonics.

However, it should be made clear right away that if you think of a skin tonic as a cleansing product, you're actually wrong. Natural floral water will have a slight cleansing effect, but that's not its real purpose. Other skin tonics may not have that property at all.

To cleanse the skin and remove make-up residue and other impurities, we recommend that you read more about oil-cleaning method or how to remove make-up with oil.

A skin tonic is designed to balance the pH of the skin's surface between cleansing and skincare products.

There is undeniably a difference between skintonics and depending on which one you use, it can also have a sebum regulating, calming, softening and protective effect.

Pure flower water that comes from the development process of essential oils, for example, can have both anti-inflammatory and healing properties. At the same time, they can actually have a cleansing effect, but again, that's not their real purpose.

Is skin tonic right for you?

Many - especially manufacturers who don't sell them themselves - say that skin tonics are completely unnecessary.

Those who sell it obviously think otherwise.

The fact is, it's not for everyone. But those who use a skin tonic will achieve a better balanced pH value of the skin. When this is balanced and the skin is moisturised, other skincare products will penetrate better, increasing their effectiveness.

That way, you can think of a toner as a product that boosts the next product.

Some even use toner because they like the calming effect it provides. Those who are of this opinion often also find it a great way to feel fresh and clean before bedtime.

So not only can a skin tonic provide a clean feeling, soothed skin and a fresh aroma, it also makes the skin more receptive to the skincare regime that follows.

I myself use tea tree flower waterbecause I really like the refreshing and cleansing effect it leaves behind.

The skin has a very delicate acid mantle, which usually has a pH of around 5. Soap-based cleansers are typically more alkaline (have a pH above 7), which can disrupt the acid mantle on the skin. When the acid mantle is disrupted, it promotes abnormal bacterial growth and our skin becomes more susceptible to diseases, infections and even wrinkles in the long run. Toners that are more acidic (pH around 3-4) restore the skin to its natural pH.

What is skin tonic?

Basically, a skin toner is simply a facial toner that helps to cleanse and moisturise the skin. It closes pores and removes impurities, which is why it's particularly suitable for people with acne.

It also maintains the skin's natural pH level and helps to make the skin extra receptive to the skincare products you apply afterwards.

Make sure to use a skin tonic that does not contain alcohol, as it will irritate the skin.

Skin tonic for sensitive skin

For those with sensitive skin, nothing can be better than a cool toner that soothes and heals. You can even keep your facial toner in the fridge for that cool morning touch.

Search for powerful anti-inflammatory agents along with skin-repairing antioxidants and moisturisers.

Use clean towels or Kleenex to pat your face dry.

Floral waters are a by-product of essential oils. But today, they've become incredibly popular.

This is partly due to the refreshing aroma, the beneficial properties the water adds to the skin and because they are very mild. Another reason is that floral waters actually have a mild cleansing (anti-inflammatory) effect, antibacterial) effect that most skintonics don't have. That's why you can benefit from using flower water - also for impure and sensitive skin.

If you have sensitive skin, you should always go for a skin tonic that doesn't contain perfume, parabens, colourants or alcohol.

Skin tonic for dry and mature skin

When your skin is dry, there's no such thing as too much hydration, and as your skin matures (the two often come hand in hand), there's no such thing as an extra anti-ageing boost.

Hydrators and antioxidants can work together in a toner to increase the effectiveness of your moisturiser and give your skin extra environmental protection.

Skin tonic for acne-prone skin

Those with oily or acne-prone skin can use facial toners as a replacement for exfoliants or acne spot treatments by choosing skin-balancing toners that contain acids, astringent extracts or antibacterial ingredients.

What types of skin toners are there?

There are three types of face tones you can choose from, which are:

    • Alcohol-based face tonerThese are face toners that contain alcohol, which are generally not the best alternatives in the face toner department unless you have a lot of Oily skin.

    • Water and glycerine-based face tonersGlycerine-based face toners are certainly less harmful than alcohol-based ones, but the fragrance extracts they contain can still damage your skin, especially if you're allergic.

    • Water-based face tonerThese are the face toners that you should add to your skincare routine as they are usually devoid of harmful ingredients, but instead contain useful substances that prepare your skin for make-up or enhance your daily skincare routine.

How to use skin toner?

How to use skin toner on a daily basis.

In the evening

    • Cleanse your skin with your favourite cleanser. Make sure there is no cleanser residue on your skin.
    • Spray some skin toner onto a cotton pad and use it to wipe your face. It's best to wipe it upwards against the direction of hair growth to get under the tiny hairs that grow on your face and allow the product to penetrate deeper. Some toners come in a spray bottle, so you can simply spray them on.
    • Finish your evening skincare routine with your go-to treatments, serum and moisturiser.

In the morning

    • Cleaning is optional.
    • As in the evening, wipe your face with a cotton pad saturated with toner.
    • Finish your skincare routine with a moisturiser or natural oil a day and sunscreen.

Most people use a skin toner in the evening after a long day. As mentioned earlier, you should first cleanse your skin. Then you can apply skin toner.

Depending on the type of skin tonic, it should be used either by:

    • Using a cotton pad
    • By hand (usually creamy skin tonic)
    • To spray the contents (face mist)

The latter is what we also call flower water. Although it works as a spray, you don't have to spray the contents directly onto your face, although some people prefer this. Floral water can be applied using cotton pads.

After using a skin tonic, the skin may benefit from a moisturising skin care treatment such as a face oil.

However, we also recommend applying skin tonic early in the morning, as the skin has typically excreted a lot of impurities during the night.

Always apply skintonic before other skincare products, whether it's makeup, sunscreen or anything else.

Natural skin tonics - without the boring ingredients

For those who want to get rid of boring ingredients in their skincare, you won't find a skin tonic that's more pure than flower water.

With natural floral water, you get a skin tonic that is made from the extraction of essential oils. In fact, floral water is a by-product of this, as floral water is the vapour from steam distilled oil.

All our flower waters are pure and natural, distilled from unsprayed plant material and contain no additives.

Is skin tonic for men?

Absolutely yes. A facial toner can easily be used by men. As mentioned earlier, I use a tea tree water that acts as a gentle cleanser while making the skin more receptive to a moisturising face oil.

Skintonic also has a bactericidal effect, which is especially useful in the beard area to prevent Beard plague and impure skin.

Homemade skin tonic - recipe

If you want to try an inexpensive solution at home, you can make an apple cider vinegar skin tonic.

Now, not everyone loves the natural flavour of apple cider vinegar, but nevertheless, it can be effective enough.

It also balances the skin's pH and prepares the skin for the next moisturising product.

Don't use pure apple cider vinegar, but dilute it with water. To make the best version, use bottled spring water and not tap water. This is because spring water is much better for your face.

How to make your own homemade skin tonic

  • Raw apple cider vinegar
  • Filtered water/source water

Optionalt:

Mixing ratio:

For sensitive skinMix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 4 parts water

To normal / dry skin: Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 2 parts water

For oily skin: Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 1 part water

If you want to avoid the sometimes unpleasant aroma of apple cider vinegar altogether, the only option is pure flower water ツ

Should you use skin tonic?

The short answer is no. While they often pop up in these "3-step skincare routines", there's actually nothing wrong with a two-step cleanser and moisturiser.

But as you'll soon learn, toners can have many benefits and can seriously amplify and improve your current skincare routine. Good toners will never hurt; they only improve your skin.

Benefits of using face toner

  • Because toners are so thin, they are a perfect way to deliver active ingredients to the skin.
  • Toners can replace cleansers in the morning.
  • Toners improve absorptionso anything applied after them penetrates better.
  • Toners are a great way to boost moisturiser.
  • Glycolic-based facial toners or those rich in other alpha hydroxy acids can also prevent ingrown hairs.

Disadvantages of using face toner

  • The added routine step of skincare can be annoying for minimalists.
  • Some people's skin doesn't do well with excessive products.
  • The wrong toner can damage the skin.

In fact, it's good for your skin, especially in the morning and late at night before you go to bed. Here you will often find that the skin carries waste products that are nice to get rid of.

Skintonic in its natural form: floral water can also be used as a toilet water fragrance or for a fresh breath over your pillow. You'll experience its fresh breath if you apply it to your face, and there's really not much else you need. Your skin tonic doesn't need to contain all sorts of incomprehensible ingredients... just pure floral water.

I have been using apple cider vinegar for a long time, but have stopped now as I found it a bit difficult to adjust the ratio so that it wasn't too strong for my skin. However, I still use the vinegar for several other things, as it is a universally good remedy. As an aniseed toner, I now use rosewater, as it smells great and just works every time. So glad to have found yours... ordered earlier from abroad.

Hands down tea tree water is the best!!! It makes me feel like my skin is just so clean and my skin feels like new every night I remember to use it. I honestly had no idea that "water" could be so good ;)
