The story behind the oil
Frankincense starts as a resinous sap inside a particular tree family that once grew almost exclusively in the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula.
At certain times of the year, the trees are cut with special knives and out comes this resin.
Because frnkincense was in high demand from Europe and Asia, the kingdom in southern Arabia became an integral part of the world economy with shipping links to India, the Mediterranean and the Silk Road.
Some of the earliest uses of camels as a domesticated animal used for transport and utility took place in southern Arabia to enable overland transport of frankincense and myrrh.
The Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Israelites and many other cultures used frankincense as part of their religious ceremonies.
Frankincense was widely used in funeral rituals as an embalming material, an offering to the deceased and a means of covering the odour of the dead bodies.
