Rosacea

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic and potentially life-disrupting condition that primarily affects the skin on the face. Rosacea is a chronic inflammation that starts with redness on the face. Over time, the skin swells and small blood vessels become visible. Read more here about the treatment options for rosacea.

Many have observed that it typically begins after the age of 30 as a reddening of the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead that can come and go. In some cases, rosacea can also appear on the neck, chest, scalp or ears. Over time, the redness tends to become more red and more persistent and visible blood vessels may appear.

For many rosacea patients, the eyes are also affected and can feel irritated and appear watery or bloodshot.

Rosacea is a skin condition for which we don't really know the cause yet. Rosacea is characterised by the face or parts of the face becoming red and flaring up around visible blood vessels. A good oil for treating any acne and papules that may appear, as well as relieving breakouts, is evening primrose oil.

How does rosacea occur?

The actual cause of rosacea is still unknown, but it is thought that the condition may be caused by a combination of heredity and certain environmental factors. The condition is more common in descendants of Celtic cultures or in Northern Europe, especially for those with fair skin.

A number of factors seem to contribute to the worsening of blood vessels in the skin for those with rosacea, including

  • Alcohol
  • Coffee and other caffeine drinks
  • Hot food and beverages
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Extreme temperatures
  • Stress
  • Sunlight
  • Certain medicines

Things to avoid with rosacea skincare

  • Drying products - they can increase redness and make your skin more vulnerable
  • Scrubbing products - they are simply too harsh on the skin. You should avoid salt scrubs and sugar scrubs.
  • Synthetic products, alcohol and essential oils as they are irritating to sensitive rosacea affected skin.

Natural treatment for rosacea

Since the signs and symptoms of rosacea vary from one patient to another, rosacea treatment should actually be tailored by a doctor on a case-by-case basis.

Various oral medications can be prescribed to treat the papules and pimples often associated with the disease. Furthermore, a topical treatment to reduce facial redness is now available.

If you have rosacea, follow up with your doctor to ensure your skincare routine is compatible with your rosacea. A gentle skincare routine can also help control rosacea. Rosacea patients are advised to cleanse their face with a mild and non-abrasive soap, then rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry with a thick cotton towel.

Patients can use non-irritating skincare products as needed and are advised to protect their skin from the sun using a sunscreen with a SPF 15 or higher.

Cosmetics can be used to hide the effects of rosacea. Green makeup or green-toned foundations can be used to counteract redness.

Test a product first. Before using a product on your face, you should try it on a single spot on the skinsuch as the throat. If you have a reaction, avoid the product and take note of the ingredients. Rosacea irritants can vary from person to person, so your individual skin's reaction should be your guide.

Unfortunately, there is no definitive treatment for rosacea, but the symptoms can be alleviated by using a mild oil. The essential fatty acids in evening primrose oil can reduce the risk of pores becoming clogged so that lesions don't develop. The oil's fatty acids help treat rosacea by reducing inflammation, controlling the cells' utilisation of nutrients and by producing prostaglandins, which stimulate the contraction of blood vessels.
