What is beard oil?

Beard oil is beard oil. Well, oil for the beard

Using oils for your beard can both cleanse and moisturise your skin and hair, helping to balance your skin's own natural oil production, leading to a different kind of soft and healthy beard.

By its very nature, beard oil is simply oil for the beard. Homemade beard oil is a blend of beard oils that you can make yourself mixes it up.

There is a little more knowledge behind which oils you should use, whether it should be organic, cold-pressed and whether you should mix several different oils together.

The beard oils you find in the cityscape and on the internet are often mixtures of several different oils, wet vegetable and essential oils.

You buy a blend of oils that you can easily mix together at home in your kitchen. Hence homemade beard oil. Not that there's anything wrong with the other oils, because it's obviously easier to take an oil off the shelf. Just like it's easier to buy bread from the bakery than to bake it yourself.

The possibilities just get a lot more exciting when you choose to make your own homemade beard oils. You're spoilt for choice when it comes to oils, properties, moisturisation and fragrances.

Why oil is good for your beard - The modern beard needs care

We've written tonnes about oils for hair, as a natural beauty routine for women. But men's beards are no exception. Because the skin that hides behind all those facial hairs needs at least as much attention as if you shave every day. Maybe even more, in fact.

Because beard hairs can be quite coarse, men often find that their beards can itch, dandruff or even Beard plague with redness.

A full beard also makes it more difficult to access the skin beneath it, so Common skin problems such as dryness, acne, or inflammation can worsen.

A longer beard can also become quite tangled and unruly. Daily application of beard oil, followed by combing with a beard comb, will smooth the hair and encourage it to grow and lie in one direction.

Homemade beard oil helps to nourish your beard so it doesn't become stiff and hard. It helps soften the hairs in your beard and also moisturises and nourishes the skin under your beard.

In addition, a homemade beard oil can give your beard a more vibrant colour and add a special scent.

What you need for your homemade beard oil

When making your own homemade beard oil, there are a few things you need to be prepared with. These are the following:

Your savings and the problem with DIY homemade beard oil

We all know it. The whole do-it-yourself thing. It always has its advantages, but it can also be a bit of a hassle.

The great thing about making your own homemade beard oil is, of course, that you can get it exactly the way you want it. You get exactly the oil you like best.

Another advantage is that the price of the oil is somewhat cheaper - at least when you look at the amount you get compared to commercial beard oils.

The final advantage is that you can also get the scent that appeals to you the most. Or you can experiment and find more delicious scents that you like. Maybe you can even make several different ones for different purposes - aromatically speaking.

The downside is that it requires a bit of equipment, a bit of willingness to try and the desire to go to war with it.

As mentioned earlier, it's easier to buy the finished product. But if that's what you wanted, you probably wouldn't be here, would you?

Choosing a base oil for your homemade beard oil

The base oil consists of a vegetable oil. This is the oil that gives you the moisturising properties. It contains various vitamins, minerals and good fatty acids that help give the beard that soft feel.

The so-called base oils are available in many different versions. This allows you to choose the oil(s) you and your beard like best.

You can basically just apply this oil to your beard, as the next oil is primarily there to add scent to your blend.

The oil you should choose depends on what specific qualities you are looking for. When choosing an oil, you should of course focus on the beard, but it's also important to remember that the oil should also nourish the skin under the beard. There are several good oils that help to nourish both skin and hair. You can choose a single oil as the base oil for your homemade beard oil, or you can choose a blend of several different oils. It's entirely up to you.

The latter is probably most helpful for long hair, but if your beard is particularly long, it doesn't hurt to have this extra quality.

Our argan oil is 100% pure (all our oils are). It is organic and unrefined. The fact that the oil has not been treated also means that it has the natural flavour that an argan oil should have.

It can seem somewhat nutty and some people even think it smells a little pikey.

That's why most people (those who don't love the oil's natural flavour, because there are people like that too) choose to add an essential oil to give it a more fragrant aroma.

Choosing an essential oil for your homemade beard oil

Essential oils are volatile oils that are highly concentrated. Therefore, do not apply these directly to the skin.

Essential oils should always be diluted with a vegetable oil (base oil). The benefits of essential oils are that they infuse the base oil with different aromatic properties.

In addition to scent, the oil can also have a special effect. For example, Ylang Ylang is used as an aphrodisiac, it has a calming and anti-inflammatory effect.

When you use, for example, peppermint oil as an essential oil, the increased blood flow will help your beard get the nutrients it needs while stimulating the growth of the hair follicle with the extra blood flow. Thus, in some cases, you will make a homemade beard oil that helps with hair growth.

There are a tonne of different essential oils to choose from. We currently carry the following essential oils. If you're missing something, let us know hear from you.

Bottle selection

Your glass bottle should be the right size for how much beard you have. The bigger your beard, the more oil you automatically use.

Beard oils are quite economical to use and you don't use that much at a time, as the beard and skin are meant to be cared for - not drowned in grease.

You may also want a size that's easy to take with you on your travels. Regardless of the size, you should use a dark coloured bottle (brown or dark blue) as this will best protect the oil from sunlight.

Most people prefer a 30ml bottle when it comes to beard oil. It's the right size to take with you on your trip to Sweden, but also so you can use it all up before too long.

Choice of pipette or pump

For the lid of the glass bottle, you have the option of choosing a pipette or a pump. There can be benefits to both and it all depends on how you want to add the oil to your beard.

A pipette only gives you a small amount of oil at a time. You do, however, have the option to apply the oil directly into the beard. However, you should expect to use your fingertips to massage the oil into your beard and the skin underneath, regardless.

The pump gives you a good amount of oil with each press. Here you usually pump the oil directly into your hand and then apply it to your beard.

Mix it all together - time for homemade beard oil

Once you've found all your Favourites, it's time to mix it all together. After experimenting a bit, you'll quickly find your own favourites.

Personally, I like hemp seed oil as a base oil. Many times I use it in its pure form as I love its natural flavour.

Other times I choose a jojoba oil that I mix with peppermint oil or tea tree oil. Occasionally I choose Ylang Ylang, but it all depends on my mood.

Although my picture on this article doesn't reveal that I have a beard, I can reveal that I do. The picture is about seks years old and I've had a beard for a couple of years now (hmm, maybe it's time to update the picture).

Homemade beard oil for now and here use

Do you prefer to make tiny mixes that you use every time? That is, a small portion that you use right away without having to store it in a bottle.

Then you can use the following measurements:

  • 1 tablespoon of base oil
  • 1-3 drops of essential oil

Beard oil instruction - how to apply your homemade beard oil

Mix all ingredients in an amber coloured glass bottle with a pipette or pump. Shake the bottle before use.

Depending on the length of your beard, take 3-5 drops of oil in one hand (one squeeze if using a pump). Longer beards will obviously require more drops, but remember that a little goes a long way, so simply increase the amount by one to two drops at a time.

Dip the fingertip of the other hand into the oil and then rub the oil into the entire beard. Once all the oil has been applied, use your fingertips to massage the oil well into the beard, all the way to the skin. If necessary, use a small comb to smooth the beard and distribute the oil.

For best results, apply the oil daily to a freshly washed beard that has been towel dried.
